The Chippendale Yorkshire Houses Trail

Yorkshire Houses

Yorkshire contains the biggest concentration of houses with documented furniture made by Thomas Chippendale the elder and younger, perhaps reflecting the family's origins in the county.

Other Houses open to the public containing documented Chippendale furniture include

Blair Castle, Perthshire; Wilton House, Wiltshire; Bolling Hall, Bradford; Kenwood, London; Saltram, Devon; Stourhead, Wiltshire; Paxton House, Berwickshire; Petworth, Sussex; Stanway, Gloucestershire; Renishaw, Derbyshire; Osterley Park, Middlesex; Firle Place, Sussex; Dumfries House, Ayrshire.
(For links to these, see Navigation Bar at left)

Other Museums containing documented Chippendale material include

Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; Manchester City Art Gallery; National Galleries of Scotland (Duff House)
(For links to these, see Navigation Bar at left)

Cannon Hall
For John Spencer, 1768.

The patron's diary records visiting Chippendale's workshops with his architect John Carr of York. Although no securely documented furniture remain in the house, which is now a decorative art museum, there are many fine mid to late 18th century pieces on display.
