Chippendale’s Marquetry Revealed

Jack Metcalfe, the well-known specialist, will lead a Study Day on marquetry in the age of Chippendale. He will share with us his great knowledge of the techniques used in the late 18 th century derived from his project of studying and copying many of Chippendale’s most famous examples. The morning will be given over to an illustrated lecture describing how 18 th century marquetry was cut, assembled and laid and how it looked when new. After lunch there will be a close inspection of some of the pieces on display at Temple Newsam. It will be followed by a demonstration of some of the techniques used on his current work copying the Diana and Minerva commode, looking at dyes pigments, tools etc. Jack’s book on this subject is due for publication during 2009.

May 20th Visit to Clifton Castle and Constable Burton, Wensleydale

(by kind permission of the Marquess of Downshire and Charles Wyvill Esq)

Two exquisite Georgian houses which are not generally open to visitors. Clifton Castle contains many interesting and important furnishings from the family’s previous houses in Ireland, as well as fine contemporary marquetry furniture, while Constable Burton once contained the Chippendale furniture made for Denton Hall. Both houses have superb gardens which should be looking well at this time.

Members may obtain their own lunch at the café at Tennants Auction House at Leyburn where we will have the chance to preview any forthcoming sales.

Cost: £35 per person. Booking form with cheque required by 16 February.

June 28th – July 1st Visit to Kelso and houses of the Scottish Borders and Lothian

We will travel by comfortable coach from Yorkshire, and stay at the Ednam House Hotel, a charming, large 18 th century house overlooking the river Tweed at Kelso. Special visits will be arranged to a number of houses selected from Floors Castle,Arniston, Dalmeny, Mellerstain and others in private ownership. On our way up we will stop at Alnwick for lunch and to visit the magnificent Castle, and at Paxton on the way home where again lunch will be included.

At the centre of the ancient town of Kelso is its wide cobbled market square, and nearby are the ruins of the medieval abbey and the remarkable 18 th century polygonal church. The town merges with the estate of Floors Castle, rebuilt in the early 19 th century in a dramatic Scottish Baronial style for the Dukes of Roxburgh. It contains superb examples of Scottish, English and French furniture, much of it acquired in the early 20 th century by the American Duchess May (nee Goelet)

At Arniston House, a festive rococo villa by William Adam with fabulous scenic interiors, we will see a house for which Chippendale provided furniture at much the same time as Dumfries House. At Dalmeny near Edinburgh, the house of the Roseberys, there is one of the country’s best collections of French 18 th century furniture inherited through the Rothschild family connection. Mellerstain is situated a few miles to the north west of Kelso and contains superb interiors by Robert Adam. We hope to visit at least one other private house near Edinburgh. Paxton House, a Palladian jewel, was built for a German Princess who married into the Home Robertsons and was furnished by Thomas Chippendale Senior and Junior in their ‘neat but substantially good’ style over a long period, and later by Trotter of Edinburgh.

Cost £450.00 per person to include travel, three nights’ accommodation with a four course dinner with choices each evening (excluding wine), admission to all houses, and lunches at Alnwick and Paxton.

The booking form and deposit of £50 is required by 16th February please

The balance of £400 is due by 18 th May. Please note single rooms will be limited and will be allocated according to the date of receipt of your booking. (No single room supplement is payable)
